Will health insurance plans cover Breast Reduction?

Thursday, October 30, 2008 21:03
Posted in category Breast Procedures

The answer is usually yes, dependent on the patients breast size and physical symptoms.

Massive breasts can cause back pain, postural problems, deformity of the back and shoulders, skin rashes and breast pain. As a result, breast reduction is generally considered a reconstructive plastic surgery procedure and is a covered benefit by the majority of insurance companies. In addition to resolving physical problems, the procedure also improves the shape of the breast and nipple areas.

The operation is most commonly performed under general anesthesia and may be done on an outpatient basis or during a brief hospital stay. There are many different techniques, but in general, excess breast tissue and skin is removed and the nipples are repositioned with the remaining breast tissue being reshaped.

What is a Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty?

Thursday, October 30, 2008 20:55

A tummy tuck, which is also known as an abdominoplasty, is intended to give a patient a smoother, flatter abdomen. The procedure is intended to remove excess abdominal skin, reduce fat, and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. A tummy tuck is frequently performed to correct the muscle weakness and loose skin that can occur following multiple pregnancies or significant weight loss.

The procedure consists of a horizontal incision that is made just above the patient’s pubic area. The incision can be placed within the lines of the type of bathing suit, lingerie or undergarments that the patient normally wears. If there are stretch marks present on the lower abdomen, these also may be removed. The position of the belly button will not change. The patient will initially need to avoid strenuous activity, but should be able to return to work within several weeks.

Who is a good candidate for cosmetic eyelid surgery?

As people age, excess fat and wrinkles can accumulate in the upper eyelids that can make them look constantly tired or sad. Ageing lower eyelids can acquire bags and loose skin as well. Eyelid surgery removes the puffy bags under the eyes and the wrinkled folds of skin overlapping the eyelashes on the upper lids. The incisions follow the natural contour lines in the upper and lower lids.

Some patients may have lower eyelid fat removed without any external incisions by placing the incision inside the lower eyelid. The resulting incisions are closed with stitches and the lines fade and blend into natural skin creases. Patients can expect some swelling that may persist for a week or longer. The overall result is that the patient’s appearance is brighter, more alert and rested.

What are the plastic surgery procedures available after Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Thursday, October 30, 2008 20:21

Gastric bypass surgery patients who have lost massive amounts of weight usually are faced with large amounts of excess skin in different parts of their body. Most insurance companies will cover removal of the skin after a patient’s weight has been stable for a period of one year to 18 months.

Commonly performed procedures are Panniculectomy (removal of excess abdominal skin), breast lift/reduction, arm lift and thigh lift. Each of these procedures decreases the possibility of skin breakdown from tissue rubbing and allows the patient to wear different clothing and usually allows greater physical activity.

Prior to surgery patients need medical clearance from their physician and should be able to go back to work in about 2 weeks depending on the procedure performed.

What is liposuction?

Thursday, October 30, 2008 19:55

Liposuction removes localized collections of fatty tissue to give patients a smoother and slimmer body contour. The best results are obtained with patients of relatively normal weight with extra fat localized in specific areas such as the hips, buttocks, arms and abdomen.

Liposuction is usually performed utilizing a suction pump device to vacuum away the excess fatty deposits. Following surgery the patient should wear a form-fitting garment to promote skin shrinkage and minimize swelling and bruising. A patient can expect to return to work within one to two weeks.

Which patients are good candidates for liposuction?

Thursday, October 30, 2008 19:49

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localized collections of fatty tissue to give the properly selected patient a slimmer and smoother body contour. Patients who achieve the best results should be of

relatively normal weight with extra fat localized in specific areas such as the hips, buttocks, and abdomen. Liposuction is also effective in removing fat deposits from the back, legs, arms, face and neck.

Liposuction is not a substitute for proper diet and exercise and is not a procedure for overall weight loss. If the patient’s skin has lost much of its elasticity, they may need a skin tightening procedure such as a thigh lift, tummy tuck, arm lift or buttock lift. Following surgery, the patient may wear a snug garment to promote skin shrinkage and to minimize swelling and bruising. The patient can expect to return to work within one or two weeks.

What are the procedures for breast enlargement?

Breast enlargement (Augmentation Mammaplasty) improves the shape of the breast and the patient’s overall appearance by increasing the size of underdeveloped or small breasts. It can also benefit women who

have lost breast volume as a result of childbirth. Most women who undergo breast enlargement receive Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved saline-filled breast implants. The incision can be made underneath the breast (just above the crease), in the armpit, or around the lower edge of the pigmented area surrounding the nipple. A pocket is created for the implant to be placed into, directly under the breast tissue or underneath the chest muscle. Return to work can be within one-two weeks and return to exercise within three-four weeks
