What is a Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty?
Thursday, October 30, 2008 20:55A tummy tuck, which is also known as an abdominoplasty, is intended to give a patient a smoother, flatter abdomen. The procedure is intended to remove excess abdominal skin, reduce fat, and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. A tummy tuck is frequently performed to correct the muscle weakness and loose skin that can occur following multiple pregnancies or significant weight loss.
The procedure consists of a horizontal incision that is made just above the patient’s pubic area. The incision can be placed within the lines of the type of bathing suit, lingerie or undergarments that the patient normally wears. If there are stretch marks present on the lower abdomen, these also may be removed. The position of the belly button will not change. The patient will initially need to avoid strenuous activity, but should be able to return to work within several weeks.
